ChooseWell Communities in Louisville: What They Do and How You Can Help

Parenting is hard. Early sobriety is hard. Doing both while trying to keep housing stable, raise small children, make appointments, and figure out what comes next is a lot.

That is the space ChooseWell Communities works in here in Louisville.

ChooseWell supports young families committed to sobriety, with a focus on helping parents create healthy homes for their children. Their work includes housing, help navigating health and social services, parenting support, and paths toward education or employment.

I moved to Louisville to work as an affordable housing advocate before I ever got into real estate, so I tend to notice organizations doing practical work around housing and family stability. I want to know what the program actually does, who it serves, and how people can help.

ChooseWell has pretty clear answers to all three.

What does ChooseWell Communities do in Louisville?

ChooseWell Communities works with families in recovery who have young children. Its Project Thrive program anchors families in safe, affordable housing and surrounds them with support around recovery, parenting, transportation, health services, education, and work.

The idea is pretty simple. Housing, parenting, work, and recovery affect each other. Pretending they are separate problems does not make them separate problems.

ChooseWell's Community Connectors help families navigate health and social services. Parents can receive coaching around parenting challenges. The organization also helps families build education and employment plans based on each parent's strengths and interests.

That practical piece matters to me. "Get back on your feet" sounds nice. It is not a plan.

How does ChooseWell help parents get back into the workforce?

ChooseWell also runs KYnship Works, a workforce development pilot for people in recovery.

The program is paid, runs for 12 weeks, and includes 20 hours of work and training each week. Participants build job readiness, time management, household management, and interpersonal skills while receiving support designed around recovery and family stability.

The program also addresses something that can make returning to work complicated. Earning more money can sometimes cause someone to lose public benefits before their income is high enough to cover the difference. KYnship Works uses tools intended to help participants understand those tradeoffs as their work hours and wages change.

Again, that is the kind of detail I pay attention to. A job is important. Keeping the job, understanding what changes with the paycheck, and having the rest of your life stable enough to make work possible matter too.

Where is ChooseWell Communities located?

ChooseWell's offices are inside Americana Community Center at 4801 Southside Drive in Louisville.

The organization moved there in 2026, saying it wanted to be more connected to the community it serves. Americana is in the Beechmont area, so ChooseWell is working in a space connected to the families and partner organizations around it.

For a local nonprofit, I think that matters. I like knowing where an organization is, what it does there, and whether its work is actually connected to Louisville.

How can you volunteer with ChooseWell Communities?

ChooseWell has several volunteer options, and they are refreshingly specific.

Right now, the organization says its most urgent need is for Play Makers and Feed Our Folks supporters on Wednesday evenings. Play Makers help with childcare while parents participate in programming. Feed Our Folks supporters provide meals.

There are other volunteer roles too, including helping at community events, putting together baby baskets, and assisting with miscellaneous needs such as errands or thank-you notes.

This is much more useful than "we need volunteers."

You know what they need. You can look at your schedule and decide if you can actually do it.

Can you donate to ChooseWell Communities?

Yes.

ChooseWell says more than 75 percent of its operating funds come from individual supporters. People can make donations or sign up for recurring monthly giving through its Butterfly Investor program.

If you are deciding where to put charitable dollars, I always think it is worth doing a little homework first. Read what the organization says it does. Look at its programs. Look for financial information.

ChooseWell publishes annual reports and IRS Form 990 tax filings on its website, so you can review more than a donation page before deciding.

That is a good thing.

What is Walk Through the Wild?

If you want to support ChooseWell in person, its ninth annual Walk Through the Wild is Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Louisville Nature Center.

Tickets are currently $10. The event includes access to the Nature Center's trails, plus games, live music, food, and drinks.

So yes, supporting a local nonprofit can literally mean taking a walk through the woods on a Saturday morning.  Plus, you can say “hi” to me!

There are worse ways to spend ten bucks!

Why I'm sharing ChooseWell Communities

My real estate business is in Kentuckiana, but housing has never just been houses to me.

Before real estate, I worked in affordable housing advocacy. I have seen how quickly housing, work, family stability, transportation, health care, and money can become tangled together.

That is why ChooseWell caught my attention. Their work is not built around pretending one service fixes everything. They are working with families across several of the pieces that affect whether a parent can build a stable home while maintaining sobriety.

If you want to support ChooseWell Communities, start with what actually fits your life. Volunteer on a Wednesday night. Provide a meal. Make a donation. Go to Walk Through the Wild on October 17. BONUS:  I’ll be there and you can bring your kids!!!

Pick one and do the thing.

Want to support ChooseWell Communities? Start with what fits. Volunteer, donate, or join them at Walk Through the Wild on October 17. Their website has the current details, so go straight to the source and pick the thing you'll actually follow through on.
